Learning how to master a language in a few simple steps!

English language skills broaden the horizons of students by giving them access to a global culture and better job prospects. Since Brainware University has students from different vernacular backgrounds, its Department of English and Literary Studies organised a workshop on English Made Easy: Improving Language Skills on December 21 ,2020 at 4 PM.

The main aim of this workshop was to ensure that all students get the opportunity to strengthen their language skills and in turn improve their prospects in the job market.

Ms Monisha Sen, senior English language teacher at The Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark, was the guest speaker for the workshop. Ms Sen demonstrated how the commonly used translation method of speaking was bound to fail. “It won’t get you anywhere. English and most Indian languages are too different for this method to work. Instead, start to think in English,” she advised.

English language for Ms Sen can be mastered through “reading out loud, paying attention to pronunciation and thinking in English”. How can one think in English? Ms Sen urged students to “describe your surroundings, your day and your feelings in English to start immersing yourself in that language. Initially you will make mistakes but it will help develop your word association skills which is a precursor to fluency”, she said. Reading newspapers out loud was suggested as another way to develop language skills.
