Recognizing new roles

The Department of Law, Brainware University organized a workshop on ‘Role of Independent Director in Corporate Governance: A Review’ on September 20, 2021. The objective of the workshop was to elaborate on how an independent director contributes to enhancing corporate credibility and governance standards. To grace the occasion, the guest speaker, Dr. Alok Ray, former Secretary of Corporate laws Committee, Ethical Standard Board, Corporate Governance Committee of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) at New Delhi and also Study Groups on Networking of CA Firms was invited.

The workshop was organized online through Google Meet platform and attended by more than 150 participants, including students and teachers. The chief guest highlighted, “The roles of Independent Director broadly include improving corporate credibility and governance standards functioning as a watchdog, and playing a vital role in risk management. Independent directors play an active role in various committees set up by the company to ensure good governance.”

Dr. Ray, who had also been the visiting faculty at WBNUJS, Kolkata, Burdwan University, IISWBM, Kolkata, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, and EMPI, New Delhi, demonstrated the whole idea of corporate governance starting from Cadbury Committee to the composition of Steel Authority of India and Infosys.

Thereafter, the lecture was followed by the Q&A session. The curious audience came up with several queries to which the guest responded patiently and with a touch of intellectual flavour. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks offered to the guest from the participants and the organizing committee of Brainware University.
