On December 10, 2021 the Department of Biotechnology, Brainware University organized an online workshop on “Structure and molecular bases of Xkr-mediated phospholipid scrambling in apoptotic cells”. Dr. Sayan Chakraborty, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Anesthesiology, Biophysics, Physiology, and Systems Biology, Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University was invited as the guest speaker.

Mr. Chakraborty explained in detail the mechanism behind the process of apoptosis, which is a programmed form of cell death. It is a highly regulated process, which if occurring in excess leads to atrophy and if occurring in an insufficient amount leads to diseases like cancer. The students were impressed with the depth of knowledge on offer and this was evidenced by the many thought-provoking questions that were asked during the interactive session.

It was not just an academic session as Mr. Chakraborty shared many details about scholarships and stipends available under the Department of Anesthesiology, Biophysics, Physiology and Systems Biology at the Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University. The students were greatly enthused by this information which would help them greatly in planning their future careers. "We were thrilled to have such a great session which was both academic and career-oriented. We hope to have many such events in the future," said Dr. Sritama De Sarkar, the head of the Department of Biotechnology.
